Ministry of Housing, Urban and Rural Affairs

The Ministry of Housing, Urban and Rural Affairs was established in October 2011. The ministry is responsible for a number of policy areas, which belonged previously under the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of Interior and Health, the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and the Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs.

The Minister

Carsten Hansen was born in 1957 in Odense and is a trained plumber. On 3 October 2011, Carsten Hansen (S) was appointed Minister for Housing, Urban and Rural Affairs. Carsten Hansen has been a member of the Danish Folketing (the Danish Parliament) since 1998. Over the years he has held a number of posts in the Social Democratic Parliamentary Group. In 2006 he was appointed chairman of the Social Democratic Parliamentary Group, a position that he maintained until he became minister. Carsten Hansen is married and has two daughters.

The Permanent Secretary

Claes Nilas is Permanent Secretary of State at the Ministry of Housing, Urban and Rural Affairs. Prior to that, Mr. Nilas has served as Permanent Secretary of State at the Danish Ministry of Refugee, Immigration and Integration Affairs, Permanent Secretary of State at the Danish Ministry of Family and Consumer Affairs and CEO of the Council for the Development of the Capital Region of Copenhagen. Mr. Nilas holds a number of key positions in think tanks and is a dedicated observer and innovator of the public sector. As Master of Law, Mr. Claes Nilas also serves as lecturer at the Law Department of the University of Copenhagen.
